New Beginnings

Within a matter of hours, the new year will be upon us. It feels like this year flew by, and that I was just celebrating 2011. It's always exciting to start fresh and create new resolutions, even if you don't stick with them the whole year. Tonight is all about having fun and relishing in the possibilities of 2012.

I hope everyone has a fabulous and safe night! Here is some inspiration for your celebration:

Intellectual Getaway

I love to read and spend time at bookstores, scouring the rows of isles for new finds. I've also always loved the idea of having a library or "study" in my home. It seems like such a great escape from outside distractions. Architectural Digest online recently posted an archive of home libraries they've shot over the years. If only I had an extra room to put all my books in...one day!

Here are a few of my favorites out of the bunch. You can view the entire slideshow here.

Winter Whirl

I can't believe it's already December. This year flew by! It's so much fun to decorate for the holidays and bring the season's cheer into the home. Even in Los Angeles it's getting cold, which is perfect for lighting the fireplace and drinking hot cocoa. No matter where you live, it's easy to appreciate the little things:

Design 101

While browsing the design section of Barnes & Noble today, I stumbled upon this great book called Decorate by Holly Becker and and Joanna Copestick. This guide is filled with tons of design tips, ideas, and solutions, as well as hundreds of pictures (which is the best part!). I especially love the modern decor featured throughout the book - perfect for my own design inspiration.

Pretty Paper

In an era of text messages and email, it can be so refreshing to receive a handwritten letter in the mail. There's this great little store in L.A. called sugar paper that sells high quality stationary and custom designs. Even if I leave empty handed, it's still fun just to browse their cards, stationary, and gifts. Luckily, you can purchase their products online, if you're not in the area. Here are some of my favorites:

Are you Ready?

For me, it's a struggle to wear makeup. Not because I don't like it, but because I have sensitive skin around my eyes, so it's tough to find brands that are non-irritating. I've been limited to wearing brands such as bareMinerals. Unfortunately, their loose powder eyeshadows are a bit messy, and hard to clean up. Lucky for me, they recently came out with READY eyeshadows that are in solid form.

Excited to try it out, I bought their limited edition Cocktail Hour eight color set. I tend to lean towards cool toned shadows, so this was perfect for me.

So far, I've tried on four out of the eight colors. These eyeshadows are very saturated. Their color stays true when applied to the eyes. The darker colors really do come out just as dark - they don't apply sheer like some other brands. I especially love the purple colors, which go well with my brown eyes. And the color stays put all day (bonus!)

The verdict: Would I recommend these? I'd say yes. I like that these shadows are paraben, binder, and filler free, and contain their signature minerals. If you like their loose powders, then you're sure to enjoy these new solids. The only con is the price. I think that $40 is a bit steep, but they also sell less expensive 2-color and 4-color sets.

Have you tried their new shadows yet? What do you think?

All About Boots

It's finally jacket and boot season here in Los Angeles. Although I love the summer sun, it's so much fun to wear layers. One of my favorite fall items are boots - they're perfect for dressing up an otherwise simple outfit. There are so many styles too, so you can never go wrong. Here are some boots I'm loving this season:

Spanish Getaway

Being half Spanish, I've been lucky enough to visit Spain many times throughout my life. However, I haven't been there in a couple of years - which is making me miss the food and culture. Everything feels so different there compared to Los Angeles, which can be very refreshing. Here are some photos of my favorite things in Spain:

Southern Comfort

My friend told me about Paula Deen's recipe for "Pumpkin Gooey Butter Cakes." Pumpkin and butter in the same sentence? Sure, sounds good to me! Of course, this recipe has a ton of butter in it, but hey...you usually don't cook dessert with health in mind. I'm going to try out this recipe soon for the holidays. How delicious does this cake look?

Design Duo

I recently watched the show Home by Novogratz for the first time on HGTV. The show follows design couple Robert and Cortney Novogratz around New York as they design spaces for their clientele. I'm loving their quirky, colorful designs. Now I just need to get on their show...apartment makeover please!

Museum Madness

The Tim Burton exhibit has been at the LACMA in L.A. since May. I've been meaning to go but I never got around to it. I just realized that next weekend is closing weekend - now I really need to go before it's too late! How amazing does this exhibit look?!

Shoe Hunt

The past couple of weeks, I've been on a mission to find the perfect pair of flats. After losing hope, I decided to make one last stop to a mall in Redondo Beach. Luckily, I found these adorable flats from Steve Madden. I'm usually not one to buy things with lots of rhinestones on them, but these shoes were too cute to pass up. They're perfect for dressing up, or going casual.

Rent the Runway

I'm loving the concept behind Rent The Runway. It's an online company that lets you rent a designer dress for a fraction of the retail price. Plus, they send you two sizes for the perfect fit. I haven't rented a dress yet (still waiting for the perfect event), but until then, I'll drool over my favorite dresses...

Pumpkin Fun

I can't believe Halloween is only a couple of weeks away. I remember carving pumpkins every year with my family, using those flimsy little carvers that you can buy at the supermarket. There are so many cute and creative ideas for decorating pumpkins - without even having to carve. Here are some adorable ideas to try out for the holidays:

Cozy Days

I've been sick with a cold the past few days, which is never fun. But it's also a good excuse to curl up with a good blanket and stay warm. With the weather getting cooler, what's better than hot cocoa, an inviting bed and comfy clothes?
